Today reminded me why hands on education still matters

Today reminded me why hands on education still matters.

We just completed our Introductory MSK Ultrasound Course in collaboration with The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust few weeks ago.

The room was full of clinicians who showed up early, asked sharp questions, and stayed engaged until the final minute.

I had the privilege of serving as Course Director for the day.

And I had the chance to teach alongside outstanding faculty including Gordon Lumsden and Martin Black

The energy in the room was clear from the start.

People gathered around ultrasound machines.

They scanned shoulders, arms, knees , Hamstrings, and Calfs.

They compared findings.

They challenged each other with real clinical questions.

They connected anatomy, imaging, and patient care in real time.

That is where real learning happens.

Not in passive lectures.

But in active discussion around the probe, the screen, and the patient.

Throughout the day we explored core MSK ultrasound principles.

→ Probe positioning and image optimization.

→ Recognizing key musculoskeletal structures.

→ Understanding common MSK pathology.

→ Interpreting what the image actually means clinically.

The discussions were honest and practical.

People shared cases from their own practice.

Faculty and candidates worked through challenges together.

Every session sparked more questions.

That is the sign of a good course.

The day moved quickly.

From the first scan in the morning to the final discussion in the afternoon.

Everyone stayed engaged.

Everyone contributed.

And everyone left with sharper skills.

The day would not have been successful without the support from GE HealthCare .

Special thanks to Holly Pike for the help, coordination, and equipment that made the hands on training possible.

I am grateful to the faculty, the participants, and the team at Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust who helped make the day run smoothly.

Great teaching always depends on great people in the room.

Now we move forward.

At the end of this month we will run the next course.

The focus will be MSK Trauma.

More scanning.

More discussion.

More practical learning.

I am already looking forward to it.
